About

Hello! I’m Andrew, but people call me Bob, but that’s a story for another time. My wife and I decided to cut the cord and kiss our cable bill goodbye in 2004. Since then, I estimate we’ve saved over $6,000!

…Here’s our story:

I’d heard we could get HDTV out of thin air using nothing but a pair of rabbit ears. It sounded slightly insane. My youthful memories of using a TV antenna involved tin foil and strange arm movement, but being a lover of technology I wanted to give it a try.

I picked up a $10 antenna from a big box store and headed home to try it out. I decided to try our upstairs TV first as we lived some 25 miles from the TV broadcast towers. I figured it was my best shot at getting any kind of signal. After the TV performed a channel autoscan I found myself looking at an AMAZING, crystal clear, picture. It was even better than our DVD player!

I stood there with my jaw open for several minutes before even investigating if we had any english channels. The picture was so crisp and clear with none of the “snow” I’d remembered from the old analog TV days.

A month or two later I watched Michael Phelps make history in Athens on our main living room TV in HD glory thanks to an amplified antenna in my attic. That was the moment I decided to never go back to paying the cable company.

In the last ten years I’ve tried numerous methods to create the ultimate in non-cable/satellite TV experience. The growth of the internet video services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, etc…is making it easier than ever before to cut the cord and not sacrifice any of your favorite shows.

When I was laid-off in April of 2014 my wife and I began evaluating our expenses. I realized how long it had been since we’d paid for cable. In 2004, I’d never heard of the term “cutting the cord”. According to Google Trends the term suddenly appears on the scene around 2007 and has been growing steadily since.

I wondered how many others might be interested in cutting the cord, but like me in 2004, weren’t sure how to go about it. I realized I had a lot of experience and information I could share. Thus, overtheairtv.info was born.

My goal is to create awareness and teach people step-by-step how to take advantage of the TV that is available over the air and via the internet. I want everyone interested in cutting the cord to feel equipped to try it and for those that have already cut the cord I want to provide step-by-step resources to enhance their TV experience.
